Manchester United have been knocked Grimsby Town out of the Carabao Cup on penalties after a hard fought clash.
It was the scene of a proper cup tie as Manchester United travelled to Grimsby on Wednesday night, and it ended in a cup classic, for neutrals.
After a rocky start from United, the hosts took advantage of poor defending as Andre Onana had a blunder to see Grimsby go 1-0 ahead.
Soon after, from a corner, United were 2-0 down, with Onana once again the main culprit.
The second half saw Manchester United dominating, but creating little until Bryan Mbeumo scored a promising solo goal, making it look easy.
Harry Maguire then equalised for United, making it 2-2, to send the game to penalties.
The penalty shootout went on forever, but after 26 penalties Mbeumo missed for United, hitting the crossbar.

Harry Maguire is a must have for Manchester United
Time and time again, it is Harry Maguire who has stepped up to save Amorim in times of need and the equaliser against Grimsby was huge.

Maguire is a player United need to find a place for in the starting line-up, perhaps with Matthijs de Ligt on the right and Leny Yoro left.

Bryan Mbeumo off the mark for Manchester United
While the majority of United’s night was negative, personally it was a night when Mbeumo showcased what he is made of.
In the pouring rain, Mbeumo came off the bench at half time and changed the game, creating a hatful of chances and scoring his first goal for the club.
Many players would crumble in this situation from the embarrassment and frustration, but Mbeumo stood up and deserves praise for that.
Andre Onana has to go after double blunder vs Grimsby
The past week has seen Manchester United’s goalkeeping department at the forefront of discussion and it will be once again following the Grimsby game.
Andre Onana had two first-half howlers, first getting beaten at his near post and then contributing United’s latest embarrassing corner situation as he missed the ball with his punch.
Onana is tipped for a United exit before deadline day, with Senne Lammens set to arrive at the club. One thing which is sure, the Cameroonian has no way back from here.
Kobbie Mainoo can hold his head high at Manchester United
While Manchester United’s entire team almost capitulated in the first half against Grimsby, Kobbie Mainoo was the rose among thorns, deserving better from his teammates.
The midfielder had a spotlight cast on him by the speculation over his future which has even seen Real Madrid linked with a move for Mainoo.
However, the 20-year-old put his head down and enjoyed the best game of any player in red, albeit the bar was low.
Mainoo showed here why he needs to be playing for Amorim week in week out in the pivot next to Bruno Fernandes. He is one of United’s best players.
Ruben Amorim on very thin ice
This game was supposed to be a chance for Ruben Amorim to build some momentum and score some goals, but it ended up being as hard fought as that 5-4 Lyon game.
Amorim will feel hard done by, with Onana effectively handing Grimsby a 2-0 lead and a mountain for United to climb. They did climb it before losing on penalties but the embarrassment remains.
Now, Amorim put simply has to beat Burnley comfortably, it will be a long international break.
