Manchester United player ratings: 'Abysmal' 2/10 and four 3/10s in humiliating Grimsby defeat - gallery

Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo changed the game but Andre Onana was abysmal as Manchester United were humiliated by Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round on Wednesday night. Ruben Amorim made eight changes to his starting line up as Onana and Kobbie Mainoo were each handed their first starts of the new season.

Grimsby were the better side and deservedly took the lead when Charles Vernam fired in at the far post after some diabolical defending. The home side continued to dominate proceedings in the first half and doubled their lead when Tyrell Warren bundled the ball over the line after a howler from Onana.

Amorim made three changes at half-time, but it was Grimsby who nearly had a third when Ayden Heaven produced a heroic block in his box to deny a certain goal. Heaven also went close through a header before Bryan Mbeumo grabbed a goal back when he fired in from the edge of the box. United pushed for a dramatic equaliser and got one when Harry Maguire headed in from a corner to force a dramatic penalty shootout.

Here is how we rated the United players at Blundell Park:

An abysmal performance in normal. He was at fault for both Grimsby goals and looked nervous from the start.
