Bruno Fernandes couldn't hide his disbelief as Manchester United endured a humiliating opening to their Carabao Cup second-round clash against Grimsby Town.
The club skipper started on the bench, with manager Ruben Amorim opting to give Kobbie Mainoo a chance from the off. But they crumbled in the opening period, with their League Two hosts racing into a 2-0 advantage by the break.
Charles Vernam struck first to put the home side ahead. Fernandes looked utterly dejected by his side's defensive breakdown, with TV cameras catching him covering his face with his hands, but things went from bad to worse when Tyrell Warren found the net.
He pounced on a mistake from Andre Onana - who had been given a rare start amid uncertainty over his future - to extend the lead within 30 minutes.
Reacting to the chaos, Sky Sports co-commentator Alan Smith remarked: "You can't believe the space Grimsby are getting at the moment. United are at sixes and sevens at the moment!", reports the Manchester Evening News.

"It's car crash TV as far as United and Onana are concerned, never looked like climbing or getting two fists on this!".
"If you decide to come. You have to get it as a goalkeeper. He was all over the place, Onana."
Smith added: "It always transmits to your defenders if your goalkeeper is a nervous wreck. United are too anxious and nervous in possession. Up the other end, it's very different."

Ex-teammate Phil Jones gave a succinct summary of the situation at half-time. "It's been a really torrid first half for Man United. The goalkeeper doesn't cover himself in glory.
"United have struggled to gain momentum in the game. Grimsby have been outstanding.

"[Onana] is going through a phase in his career where he's trying so hard to rectify the mistakes he's made. I've been there. It's a tough place to be."
It didn't get any better for the Red Devils, and despite coming back with two late goals, they were dumped out on spot-kicks.
