The astonishing 147-year record that one Everton player broke against Mansfield Town

Everton advanced to the third round of the Carabao Cup as they defeated Mansfield Town 2-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Carlos Alcaraz opened the scoring with a brilliant right-footed strike into the top corner before Beto added the second late on.

Everton fans got the chance to see new £40m signing Tyler Dibling for the first time, too, as David Moyes brought him on in the 60th minute.

Dibling impressed supporters with his 30-minute cameo as he constantly showed for the ball and looked to drive forward.

Another notable moment emerged from the game, although, it may have been missed by many.

Seamus Coleman broke a 147-year record for Everton

Everton captain Seamus Coleman made his first appearance of the season against Mansfield as he started at right-back.

The 36-year-old only played 282 minutes of football last year, so it was nice to see the veteran get a full 90 minutes under his belt tonight.

In doing so, Coleman has actually broken a 147-year record as he’s become the first-ever outfield player to play in 17 consecutive seasons for the club.

That also equals Neville Southall’s record as a goalkeeper, which is pretty remarkable and evinces what a bargain his £60,000 transfer was.

Seamus Coleman still plays a key role for Everton off the pitch

Whilst Coleman is evidently coming towards the end of his playing career, he still plays a vital role at Everton.

Moyes has hired Coleman as a motivational speaker in the dressing room, and he’s also called upon to help new players settle in and know what it means to play for Everton.

The Scotsman was desperate to get him signed onto another contract this season as he recognises how important it is to have him around for the transition to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Coleman’s deal expires at the end of the season, but there’s little doubt he will be kept around in some capacity, likely as a coach in Moyes’ staff.

For now, though, he continues to be a reliable deputy for Jake O’Brien and Nathan Patterson.
