Manchester United were shockingly knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby, following a 2-2 draw and a penalty shootout.

Grimsby took an early lead when Charles Vernam's shot slipped past Andre Onana at his near post. The United keeper made another blunder just eight minutes later, failing to handle a cross which Tyrell Warren then nudged into the net.

United brought on Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo after half time, with the latter scoring his first goal for the club. Harry Maguire managed to level the score in the 89th minute with a header.

However, Clarke Oduor and Matheus Cunha missed their penalties in the shootout, leading to sudden death. Mbeumo missed the crucial penalty, resulting in a 12-11 victory for Grimsby.

Here are the player ratings from the match at Blundell Park:

Andre Onana: Returning to the team, he was responsible for both goals. Despite a great save in the shootout and scoring a penalty, his performance was shaky, reports the Manchester Evening News. 5.

Tyler Fredricson: He struggled against the physicality of Grimsby, who targeted him throughout the game. He was substituted at half-time. 2.

Harry Maguire: Taking back the captain's armband, he reverted to his old form. Despite looking unsettled from the start and failing to stabilise United's defence, he scored a crucial goal. 7.

Ayden Heaven: He lacked composure and seemed too casual for the intensity of a League Two match, appearing to underestimate Grimsby. 4.

Diogo Dalot: Dismal at both ends. Failed to protect Fredricson and failed to provide adequate service in the final third. Scored in the shootout. 4.

Manuel Ugarte: Claimed a foul in the build-up to Grimsby's first goal. It's clear why people at the club are losing faith in him. Simply not up to scratch. Substituted at half-time. 2.

Kobbie Mainoo: The best of a bad lot in the first half but prone to careless errors with the ball. Not a performance that will earn him a place back in the side, but he did score a great penalty. 6.

Patrick Dorgu: Resorted to kick-and-rush tactics. Playing by default due to the lack of an established left winger and it shows week after week. 2.

Amad: Seemed intimidated early on and was lucky to come out for the second half. Made no impact all night. 3.

Matheus Cunha: For the first time in a United shirt, failed to make his mark against the weakest opponent. Tried but didn't succeed. Terrible penalty. 4.

Benjamin Sesko: Out of sync with his new teammates for most of the evening but came closest to scoring in the first half. Successfully converted his penalty. 5.

Bruno Fernandes: Brought some much-needed authority to United's play. 6.
