Arsenal draw Port Vale in Carabao Cup 3rd Round

Arsenal will face League One side Port Vale in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The tie will be played in the week commencing 22 September.

The two clubs have met 22 times since 1893, with the Gunners winning 13, Vale four, and five ending in draws. The last meeting came in the FA Cup in 1998 when Arsene Wenger’s side needed a replay and a penalty shootout to progress.

It’s worth noting that teams involved in European competition couldn’t draw each other, so we avoided an early showdown with Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace.

As domestic trophies go, the League Cup has been Arsenal’s kryptonite for 32 years. We’ve not lifted it since 1993 – Merson, Morrow and all that – and despite reaching the final eight times, we’ve only won it twice.

By comparison, we’ve racked up 13 league titles and 14 FA Cups.

Last season, Mikel Arteta’s side made it to the semi-finals before taking a pasting from Newcastle.

Added squad depth should, in theory, make the Gunners more competitive on four fronts this year, but let’s be honest – the League Cup is still the lowest rung on the ladder.
