Manchester City's academy did something this week that Manchester United simply failed to do vs …

Manchester City fans will no doubt be rejoicing at Manchester United’s Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby Town on Wednesday evening.

Sure, Manchester City didn’t have a great season last year and the 2-0 loss to Tottenham last time out was poor, but what happened at Blundell Park was a new low for the neighbours.

Ruben Amorim’s side plumbed new depths as they found themselves two goals down to the League Two high-flyers by the half-hour mark, courtesy of Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren.

And while Manchester United managed to find two goals – Harry Maguire bailing his side out once again in the latter stages – they couldn’t get past the epic penalty shootout that followed.

To prove just how bad the Old Trafford side were, they failed to do something that Man City’s academy did a day earlier.

Manchester City’s U21s actually managed to beat a League Two side this week

On Tuesday night, Man City’s Under-21s got their EFL Trophy campaign under way at Oldham Athletic, who are in League Two just like Grimsby Town.

However, unlike Man United on Wednesday night, Man City’s youngsters managed to beat the League Two side in front of them – quite comprehensively, in fact.

Ben Wilkinson’s charges opened the scoring through Mahamadou Sangare in the 38th minute, before Justin Oboavwoduo struck four minutes later.

Ashton Muir then made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time when he fired in with his first touch after being set up by Sangare.

Although Luke Hannant reduced Oldham’s deficit with a 52nd-minute penalty, Sangare restored City’s four-goal advantage with his second of the game on 69 minutes.

Muir then wrapped up the scoring with his second of the night in the 83rd minute, the 19-year-old firing home with a left-footed effort for a final score of 5-1 to the EDS.

Looks like Man United could learn a thing or two from City’s youngsters about beating League Two sides on the road.

Who Manchester City will face in the third round of the Carabao Cup

Man United played in the second round of the competition due to their failure to qualify for Europe.

Meanwhile, Man City enter the tournament at the third-round stage alongside the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

The draw took place just after Grimsby’s win over Man United, and the Citizens are set to go up against League One side Huddersfield Town.

The Carabao Cup third round will be split over the weeks commencing 15 September and 22 September.
