Newcastle United kick off Carabao Cup defence with home tie against League One opposition

· 27 August 2025, 22:57

**Newcastle United have learned their fate as the Carabao Cup third round draw took place later than expected, thanks to Manchester United's inability to beat League Two Grimsby Town.**

Before we get to the draw, let us all chuckle heartily at Manchester United, especially the fact that Benjamin Sesko seemingly couldn't hit a barn door, and two other Newcastle targets, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo failed to convert from the spot in the shootout, sending Grimsby into the third round draw.

It seems that Newcastle were like Neo dodging bullets this summer in the end.

Manchester United will join Sunderland in watching from afar when the third round ties take place.

Newcastle United will host Bradford City in the Carabao Cup third round

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the draw, Newcastle were the last ball out of the European pot, and that tie was designated to be a home tie for the European side, and the away side was drawn as Bradford City.

St James' Park hosting League One opposition is about as good as the draw could get for the Magpies, but as Grimsby showed tonight, anything can happen in cup competition.

Hopefully, our schadenfreude this evening won't manifest as bad karma.

The third round games will take place in mid-late September

-----------------------------------------------------------

In line with last year’s competition, this season’s Carabao Cup Round Three fixtures will take place across two weeks (beginning September 15 and September 22), with fixtures in the Champions League (week beginning September 15) and Europa League (week beginning September 22) also scheduled during this period.

As Newcastle will be involved in the Champions League in the week commencing 15th September, their Carabao Cup draw will take place during the week commencing 22nd September.

Thankfully, all of this split draw and split week nonsense ends in round four, should Newcastle make it beyond Bradford, obviously.
