Jets HC Aaron Glenn: Building a Final 53-Man Roster 'Is Still a Fluid Process'

There were some hard decisions during the "process," AG said, one of which involved the cutting of rookie WR/KR Jamaal Pritchett and the retention of WR/KR Xavier Gipson.

"Listen, Pritchett did a really good job for us," Glenn said. "But there's more than just a preseason game that everybody sees. There's a ton of practice time that Gipson's done an outstanding job. We counted most of his reps as far as a punt returner, and I think he was 145 strong without dropping a punt and actually catching it the way that I see a punt returner should catch it. So I feel really confident with him. And man, he's dynamite when he gets an open field. So it's always hard when you come to these things. But man, there's more to it than just looking at that one game. There's a ton of practice time that you have to look at."

Against the Eagles, Pritchett, who was signed to the practice squad later int eh afternoon, turned heads when he caught 4 passes for 54 yards (13.5 average) and returned 3 punts for 63 yards (21 per).

While much, as Glenn said, remains "fluid" in terms of the roster and the practice squad, one of the things that is etched in stone is that Justin Fields is Glenn's quarterback. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. If there's a question (which there was) if the QB is an extension of the HC, Glenn was ready with a pointed response.

"When you say extension, I mean that's a term that can mean a lot of different things," Glenn said. "I do believe that the head coach-quarterback relationship has to be on point. I do believe that because you want to be wired a certain way, as far as how you think the game should be going, especially in game management situations, you have to be on the same page.

"There's a number of coaches like, I don't know if [Bill] Belichick and [Tom] Brady, I don't know if he was an extension, but the thing is, they understood each other, and to me I think more to that aspect than anything else. So me and Justin talk every day. He's in my office. You know, the majority of days that he's here now, we make sure that that relationship between me and him is on point, and we talk about football constantly. And to me, that means a lot to me. And you know, we're going to continue to grow that way."
