Ex-Patriots QB returning to Cleveland after being cut by Chiefs

Bailey Zappe is returning to a familiar place.

The former New England Patriots quarterback signed with the Cleveland Browns practice squad, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported.

Zappe was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday ahead of the 4 p.m. deadline for teams to get their rosters down to 53.

The Patriots’ fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft spent two seasons in New England. Zappe was Mac Jones’ backup until the latter was benched for the former — which ignited some controversy in Foxborough before both of the quarterbacks’ tenures came to an end after the 2023 season.

Zappe spent time with the Browns in 2024. He was the emergency third quarterback in last four games before he was released to make room for defensive tackle Jowon Briggs. After Zappe cleared waivers, he re-signed with the Browns and started one game in which he threw two interceptions and one touchdown.

The Browns have a crowded quarterback room that includes Week 1 starter Joe Flacco, back-up Dillon Gabriel and third-stringer Shedeur Sanders.
