The illness is flu-like, says Calgary Stampeders boss Dave Dickenson.

“Yeah … he’s sick,” said the GM/head coach of his quarterback and top offensive weapon. “I didn’t get a lot of spoken word with him. Hope he’s doing better, though. We’ll try to get him his information (to prepare for the game).

“It is an extra day (of practice), though.”

Indeed, with the Labour Day Classic not on until Monday — when the Stamps (7-3) host the Edmonton Elks (4-6) at McMahon Stadium (2 p.m., TSN, CHQR 770 AM/107.3 FM the Edge) — there’s a few days more than usual to allow for players to ready-up.

That’s the good news, especially for Adams and others hit by illness or injury.

But the bad word, in Adams’ case, is he lives in the same building as teammate Tevin Jones, who was down and out for as many as 10 days with symptoms of “a type of flu,” says the sideline skipper.

“I know …” continued Dickenson, trying to shake off the news with a chuckle. “It’s one of those.

“Yeah … Tevin was down a long time. He’s lost quite a bit of weight. I do think he’s feeling better. But certainly, you can tell it took a toll on him.”

Jones returned to practice Wednesday, citing he’s “not where I want to be” health-wise. “But I feeling like I’m getting there.

“I was in the house, and I was just out,” continued Jones. “I felt like I was isolated from everything, so I’m just glad to be back.

“It felt good to be back practising, but what felt better was being back around my teammates and just enjoying the locker room.”

In last year’s Labour Day Classic, Jones enjoyed his best game as a football professional.

That, however, was for the Elks in a visitors’ victory, as the tall receiver ripped off 205 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. His effort was highlighted by a seven-yard score, a 73-yard TD and a memorable 106-yard play that saw Jones scoop up a fourth-quarter fumble by teammate Eugene Lewis and run 81 yards to the doorstep of the Stamps end zone.

“I got stopped at the one-yard line,” Jones said. “I was definitely tired from the special-teams play on the play before that. I’m just glad that negative turned into a positive really fast

“And we did win, so that was good.”

This year, Jones hopes to win the LDC — alongside a healthy Adams — in the opposite colours of the Red and White.

“I just can’t wait to play,” added Jones, a 32-year-old fourth-year CFLer. “Honestly, last year, it was just a normal game, but the ball just kept coming my way and the ball kept finding me. And I just did what I do normally — I just catch the ball or pick up the ball and just run with it.

“This game I hope the same things happen. But as long as we win, I’ll be happy.”

SHORT YARDAGE

Adams, also 32, has already missed time this year due to concussion-like symptoms after getting his bell rung in the 23-21 Week 8 loss to the Montreal Alouettes. It forced the QB to watch the entire fourth quarter from the sideline, and then he was declared injured for the next contest — a 31-11 drop to the host Ottawa Redblacks seven days later. Recall it was CFL-rookie QB P.J. Walker under centre for the Stampeders in that dropped game … LB Adam Bighill is more involved these days with the on-field reps for the Stamps. The decorated CFL veteran has yet to play a down for the team after getting signed two months ago. “I think he’s pushing — he’s getting closer,” added Dickenson. “You don’t ever force-feed anything, especially when you’re playing well. But I think he makes our team better, so I’d like to see him out there soon. We’ll see what happens this week.” … While the Stamps were fashioning a 32-15 victory last Saturday over the Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-2), the generosity of fans resulted in the game-day collection of 50,468 lb. of food as part of the Purolator Tackle Hunger program in support of the Calgary Food Bank. The collection raises the Stampeders’ season-long campaign total to more than 103,000 pounds. Fans can continue to drop off non-perishable food donations at the Stampeders’ ticket office until the end of the regular season.
