Manchester United knocked out by Grimsby: Post-match quotes

After a disappointing result on Sunday, Manchester United came into this game with a much-needed win against Grimsby Town.

But that wasn't the case after a shock defeat to Grimsby on penalties, after going two-nil down with goals from Charles Vernam and former Manchester United player Tyrell Warren.

But with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire sent the game to penalties

This game wasn't going to be easy, and after conceding another poor goal by Andre Onana,, it only got harder, with the hosts' confidence growing ever stronger.

Only eight minutes the visitors saw themselves go two down after a Onana missed the punch away from the corner and was tapped into the empty net by Warren.

A lovely finish from Mbeumo, who scored his first goal for the club, got his side back into the game.

Maguire scored a last minute equaliser with a back post header, saved his team from being knocked out in regular time.

He admits that his side didn't deserve to win.

He said: "It doesn't matter if you recover or not.

"What matters are the signs the team gave during the game, from the beginning.

"I know the best team won."

He was also bitterly disappointing with the players attitudes towards this game.

He said: "The best players can lose, because one proper team can win against any group of players.

"And today the team, the players, they spoke really load.

"So that's it. We lost, and the best team won."

When asked to expand on what he meant by "they spoke really loud".

He said: "The way we start the game without any intensity, all the idea of pressure, we were completely lose and that's why I think they spoke really loud".

However despite the two errors from Onana, he defended his goalkeeper.

By saying: "With all due respect, when you lose to a fourth division team, it's the goalkeeper.

"It's everything, it's the environment, it's the way we face the competition.

"We know that we are in the moment everything people will pay attention to everything.

"It's going to be massive every detail.

"We show the performance today, so my players spoke, for me, really loud."

Amorim apologised to the fans for the performance.

He said: "When you lose and see something new, it's different.

"When you see something like today, it's hard to talk about that.

"I just want to say I'm really sorry for the fans. The support they gave me, the support that with all the support they help the team.

"I have nothing to say.

"I'm really sorry.".
