William Carey Scholarship Gala to feature guest speaker Archie Manning

BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - On Wednesday, William Carey University announced former NFL quarterback Archie Manning as the guest speaker during the school’s 14th annual Scholarship Gala at the Coast Coliseum.

“We are proud to welcome native Mississippian Archie Manning to one of our most cherished annual traditions,” said Karen Golson, WCU’s director of advancement. “The Scholarship Gala provides life-changing assistance to our students.”

Manning was born in Drew, Miss., and his rise to fame began as a quarterback at Ole Miss. In 1971, he was the second player chosen in the NFL Draft, taken by the New Orleans Saints. During a 14-year NFL career, he set most Saints passing records, played in Pro Bowls, and was the NFC’s most valuable player in 1978. He is a member of the National Football Foundation and College Football Halls of Fame, and the Mississippi and Louisiana Halls of Fame.

Beyond football, Manning is a symbol of quiet leadership. His many philanthropic causes include the Boy Scouts, Special Olympics, United Way, and the American Heart Association.

This year, WCU is bringing together supporters from all over the region by combining its Hattiesburg and Biloxi scholarship galas into one event. In the coming years, the gala will alternate between the two cities.

“We are thrilled to celebrate with friends and community partners,” said Golson. “We invite businesses and individuals alike to join us as sponsors and make a lasting impact.”
