Progress made: Chelsea 'close' to sealing Garnacho transfer

Chelsea have reportedly made progress in talks over a deal for Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine is among a group of Man United players who have been told to find new clubs before the transfer window shuts next week.

In addition to Garnacho, the Red Devils are also looking to offload defender Tyrell Malacia and the attacking duo of Jadon Sancho and Antony.

Garnacho has continued to be linked with a move to Chelsea throughout the summer transfer window, and it now appears that he could be on the verge of getting his desired move.

Chelsea closing in on Garnacho deal

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are on the verge of agreeing terms with Man United over a transfer for the 21-year-old.

The report states that the final deal will be worth between £35m and £40m for a player who has three years remaining on his contract.

There is a belief that the transfer could be crucial in Garnacho realising his dreams of representing Argentina in Lionel Messi's final World Cup next year.

The 21-year-old will be desperate to force his way back into the Argentina set-up after being left out of Lionel Scaloni's squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Ecuador.

Why are Chelsea keen to sign Garnacho?

On the face of it, Chelsea are not in desperate need of Garnacho's services, having already added to their wide options with the additions of Estevao and Jamie Gittens this summer.

However, the Blues are expected to offload Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling and Tyrique George before the transfer deadline.

As a result, Chelsea will need to strengthen to add depth and variety to Enzo Maresca's wide options, especially as they want a squad capable of competing in the Champions League.

There is also the possibility of making a profit on their investment if Garnacho succeeds at Stamford Bridge, considering the attacker is only 21 and has room to develop his game.

Even if the move does not work out, Chelsea will still believe they can recoup some of their investment, especially since a £35m to £40m fee is not too high in the modern-day transfer market.
