Two former Alabama players who survived the cut of NFL preseason rosters to the 53-man limit of the regular season on Tuesday did not make it through Waiver Wednesday in the NFL.
The Indianapolis Colts waived defensive tackle Tim Smith and the New England Patriots waived wide receiver Javon Baker on Wednesday after claiming players who had been waived by other NFL teams on Tuesday.
A sixth-round selection in the NFL Draft on April 26, Smith lost his roster spot as Baltimore picked up linebacker Chad Muma, a veteran of 50 NFL regular-season games over the past three seasons. The Jacksonville Jaguars waived Muma on Tuesday.
Baker joined New England as a fourth-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. He had a 12-yard reception and three kickoff returns for 79 yards while on the field for 90 offensive snaps and 28 special-teams plays.
The Patriots needed roster spots after adding quarterback Tommy DeVito from the New York Giants and defensive back Charles Woods from the Los Angele Rams as waiver claims.
With Alabama from 2020 through 2024, Smith played in 63 games for the Crimson Tide. Baker was a teammate of Smith’s in the 2020 and 2021 seasons before transferring to UCF. He had nine receptions for 116 yards and one touchdown while at Alabama.
