Huskers arrive in Kansas City in 'high expectations mode'

Don't bite on the posts circulating on social media that the Huskers got a bad end zone paint job at Arrowhead Stadium.

It wasn't true. Instead just another reminder we need a football game.

It is fact, though, that the Huskers made it to Kansas City and took a walk through the stadium late Wednesday afternoon. That included a greeting from Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid outside Nebraska's locker room.

A warm Red Kingdom welcome from Big Red himself.

The Huskers left for KC a little after 1 p.m. on Wednesday after a breakfast and walk through in Lincoln in the late morning.

Nebraska planned to bus out around 80 players who will be available to play on the 'travel roster' so to speak, with the rest of the team coming down later to take in the game.

"This group of guys has really enjoyed seeing the visiting stadiums," Matt Rhule said Tuesday of the team taking in Arrowhead on Wednesday in a "very light walk through."

Wednesday night would include a team movie, with the new "Superman" flick as the pick.

Then a snack, then sleep, then gameday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Thursday between Nebraska-Cincinnati with anticipation of north of 60,000 Husker fans attending to give NU a homefield advantage even though it's technically a home game for the Bearcats.

"I don't even consider it neutral site. Arrowhead seems like part of our DNA, our footprint," Rhule said Tuesday. "So I think this feels like a home game lite. I expect to have the same home game intensity if not even more so because we're more excited as a fan base to see this team for the first time."

Rhule said when you have a chance to play a Power 4 team, it's exciting. Then mix that with Nebraska playing for just third time at Arrowhead Stadium. The last appearance was a 21-7 loss to Oklahoma in the 2006 Big 12 title game. The first appearance was a 24-17 win over Oklahoma State in 1998 fueled by a Joe Walker punt return and goalline stop as time expired.

This one figures to be a good test off the bat for Nebraska against a Big 12 team that has a returning QB and has remodeled itself at key spots in the portal, with most lines having the Huskers favored by 6 1/2 as of Wednesday night.

"The only thing worse than having high expectations is having no expectations. So we're certainly in that high expectations mode, which gives you maybe a little bit of extra nerves headed into a game," Husker athletic director Troy Dannen said on "Sports Nightly" this week. "But I know Coach likes where things are at. I've been around a lot of coaches. This is 18 years for me. He's in a particularly calm place. Has been the entire fall camp.

"I think you can attribute that to maybe the staff changes and his comfort with the staff. Just the growth of the roster that he's had. And I think he did a really good job of filling in through the portal in some areas where maybe they had some holes. I think everybody wishes it were Thursday night tonight."

It is a high-profile national spotlight for the Huskers to aim to deliver in Week 1. Dannen noted ESPN strategically put Nebraska in its primest of primetime windows for this Thursday night game.

While some might prefer seeing their Huskers play on a Saturday, Dannen said even last year when few liked the Friday night home game against Illinois there were more than 4 million eyeballs on that game. And even though Nebraska hasn't won as much as it would like the past two decades, Dannen said "as strong as (the brand) is here, it may carry the same weight nationally whether we want to believe that or not."

Adding to it is the nationwide appetite for football to begin.

Across the country people are juiced for the first big college football weekend with every little thing seeming to garner attention, like a social media post on Wednesday that showed the end zone paint job on Nebraska's not looking as good as Cincinnati's.

One problem with that. The picture was taken in the middle of the job.

No "Chefs" situation here.
