NFL roster cuts trimmed opportunities for several former Missouri Tigers standouts this week, but practice squads provided a quick landing spot for a fortunate few.
Quarterback Brady Cook, kicker Harrison Mevis, wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. and running back Cody Schrader were all waived Tuesday, but each signed to practice squads the following day.
Cook, Mevis sign to Jets’ practice squad
Brady Cook, last year’s starting quarterback at Mizzou, signed to the New York Jets’ practice squad Wednesday after being waived a day earlier in the final round of cuts.
The three-year starter at MU was released despite a strong showing in camp. Cook, who joined New York as an undrafted free agent, completed 25-of-38 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the preseason.
Mevis also landed on the Jets’ practice squad after being waived Tuesday. The Tigers’ all-time leading scorer went 3-for-4 on field goal attempts and converted both of his extra-point tries during the preseason.
Wease joins Dolphins’ practice squad
Wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. was added to the Miami Dolphins practice squad Wednesday after being waived in the roster reduction a day earlier.
The undrafted rookie impressed in the preseason with 10 catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Wease transferred from Oklahoma and spent his final two seasons at Missouri, finishing with 109 receptions for 1,566 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Schrader returns to Rams’ practice squad
Running back Cody Schrader rejoined the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad Wednesday after being waived in Tuesday’s roster cuts. He spent most of last season with the unit but appeared in one regular season game, taking his lone carry for three yards.
Schrader impressed this preseason, recording 153 scrimmage yards on 30 touches with a receiving touchdown.
In his final season at MU in 2023, he carried the ball 276 times for 1,627 yards and 14 touchdowns, helping lead the Tigers to a strong season that culminated in a Cotton Bowl win.
Albert O joins Raiders’ practice squad
Tight end Albert Okwuegbunam, waived by the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, was signed to the team’s practice squad on Wednesday.
A 2020 fourth-round NFL Draft pick by the Broncos, he played a couple of seasons in Denver. Last season he was with the Eagles following a trade to Philadelphia, appearing in four games but recording no catches.
Burden switches jersey number
Chicago Bears wideout and former Tiger Luther Burden III will wear No. 13 this seson after spending the offseason rocking No. 87.
Burden wore No. 3 throughout his high school and college career before being selected in the second round of April’s draft. He caught five passes for 78 yards during the preseason.
