So The Not-Ready-For-Primetime-Players Squad Is Known

_“Hey, Jason Licht, I think you forgot someone.”_

Joe isn’t much into practice squad guys. They’re not on the 53, so why should Joe care?

But Joe does know there are roster junkies who lurk among us on this here corner of the interwebs waiting for the next Adam Humphries or Cameron Brate to emerge from the practice squad. Another reason Joe pays scant attention to the practice squad is there is little interest. You don’t see BSPN, FOX, NBC, Amazon, CBS or Barstool Sports spend much time on practice squad guys, do you?

So Joe offers up JC Allen’s tentative list of Bucs practice squad guys.

As Joe predicted, Garrett Greene was brought back. He showed some promise as he transitioned from West Virginia quarterback to NFL receiver. Joe thought he’d be brought back because he can play two positions in a pinch.

The Bucs also brought back Connor Bazelak, who is not an NFL quarterback. To his credit, he improved quite a bit in his four months. Bazelak, in rookie minicamp, was the pure definition of camp meat. Joe thought the Bucs could have found a quarterback from Clearwater Central Catholic or Plant high schools who was just as good.

In the Backup Bowl on Saturday night, Bazelak was still not NFL-quarterback level. But dang if Bazelak didn’t look like a different quarterback from when Joe first saw him in May.

Joe only has two other thoughts on the practice squad players.

The Bucs brought back cornerback Bryce Hall. “This Joe” was very surprised he was cut in the first place. First couple of weeks of training camp he was all over the place. Last couple of weeks, Hall did a disappearing act after an injury.

Players never want to get worse as training camp/worthless preseason drags on. Tight end Devin Culp was in the same boat. which is why Joe was a bit worried he’d get the pink slip (he didn’t).

A guy Joe thought was firmly on the bubble was tight end Tanner Taula. The Bucs have a logjam at tight end. Despite this, Taula, now on the practice squad, had a ton of targets with the second team. That’s usually a good sign a backup will make the team.
