Joelinton, Tonali and Schar: Newcastle United injury news and expected return dates ahead of…

The latest Newcastle United injury news and updates as they prepare for their upcoming Premier League clash

Newcastle United are back in action on Saturday with an away trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United. Eddie Howe’s men have one point on the board from their first two Premier League fixtures from the new season. They drew 0-0 against Aston Villa in their first game before losing 3-2 against Liverpool last time out.

The Toon Army came back from 2-0 down against the latter before conceding late on. They have the opportunity to sign some more players before the end of the transfer window. The deadline is on Monday 1st September at a slightly earlier time than usual at 7pm.

Will Alexander Isak play for Newcastle United against Leeds United?

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak has been on strike as he looks to force through an exit. He has made it clear that he wants to leave this summer. He has been prolific since his move back in 2023 but his time with the club appears to be drawing to an end soon.

Speaking after their most recent outing against Liverpool, Howe said: “I think that's the idea from everyone. Our side, Newcastle's side, is we want clarity, we want to move forward, we want the narrative to change because we're in the start of the season now, we're into the action and we've got to get results and we've got to try and focus on what we can control. We've given two really, really good performances, we've ended up at one point. That's tough for us to take, especially in this moment, when you're looking for positive to cling to. But we battled through and we've now got on to lead.”

Isak, 25, has been called up to Sweden’s squad for the upcoming September international break so he is fit. He joined the Magpies two years ago and has since scored 62 goals in 109 games in all competitions, 27 of which came in the last campaign. The forward has also had spells in the past with the likes of Borrusia Dortmund and Real Sociedad.

As Howe alluded to in his post-Liverpool game comments, the situation needs resolving as soon as possible. It isn’t helping anybody and they need to sell him fast. That will give them enough time to source an adequate replacement.

Will Sandro Tonali and Joelinton be fit for Newcastle United?

Newcastle will need to make checks on midfield duo Sandro Tonali and Joelinton ahead of their clash against Leeds. Tonali sustained a shoulder injury against Liverpool and had to be substituted. He will need to be assessed and it remains to be seen whether he will be available.

As for Joelinton, the versatile Brazilian also went off against the Reds. He appeared to pick up an issue with his muscle. Howe will provide a further update on his condition when he speaks to the media on Friday afternoon with his situation up in the air as well at the moment.

Defender Fabian Schar had concussion against Liverpool and came off as well. Like with Tonali and Joelinton, his expected return date is unknown right now. The club will now have to follow a strict protocol with him as they gear up to play Daniel Farke’s side. Schar has posted on social media: “I am okay! Thanks for all the messages of concern. Disappointed to come off but proud of the team spirit and energy last night.”

One player who definitely won’t be playing against Leeds is winger Anthony Gordon. He was sent off against Liverpool and is now suspended. The ex-Everton man will be itching to return against Wolves on 13th September and his absence will be felt at the top end of the pitch.

Gordon, 24, is a useful option for Howe to have on the wing. His pace and power causes problems to opposition defenders. He has found the net on 22 occasions in 108 outings since joining from the Toffees in 2022.
