Five things we learned as Man United suffer shock Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town

Manchester United lost 12-11 on penalties to League Two side Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round after a 2-2 draw in normal time on Wednesday evening

Read on as we look at five things we learned from the fixture.

Tyler Fredricson is not ready for senior football

The young centre-back was handed his third senior team appearance and failed to seize the opportunity.

He struggled with the pace of Grimsby’s attack and was caught too narrow for Grimsby’s first goal, allowing Charles Vernam to score.

Andre Onana remains unreliable

Andre Onana was reinstated into the starting lineup and showed little reason why he should be United’s first choice this term, making an error that led to the second goal. He could also have done better to prevent the first.

With few days left in this transfer window, Man United must prioritise signing a shot-stopper to replace the Cameroonian to avoid another disastrous campaign.

Amad Diallo’s slow start to the season continues

The Ivorian was one of Man United’s best players last season, but has had a slow start to the season, which continued in this fixture.

He started the game as a number 10, but could not create any clear-cut opportunities, and missed a big chance to open the scoring. He also looked ineffective when shifted to right wing-back.

Harry Maguire impresses

His towering presence helped United cope with Grimsby’s long ball and set-piece threat as he won all his aerial duels. He also played well as the last man in defence, with the hosts threatening to score from counter-attacks.

The England international came through for United at the other end, scoring the equaliser to force the game into penalty shoot-outs.

No improvement in United’s attack with new signings

While United scored twice, only one came from open play despite registering 28 shots, four of which were classified as big chances.

Benjamin Sesko did not pose much threat on his first start, registering just two shots on target, and so did Matheus Cunha, who registered six shots, five of which were blocked.
