Head coach Ryan Sheahan enters his second season leading the Dinos and has plenty to be excited about this year.

The Dinos’ elite defence that was one of the best in the nation a season ago returns all but two starters. On the offensive side, Calgary will have a host of new faces, but Matthieu Clarke — the leading rusher from the past two seasons — is back and expects to once again play a big role.

Women’s Rugby

This weekend also marks the start of the 2025 season for women’s rugby 15s, as the Dinos host the University of Alberta Saturday (5 p.m.) at McMahon Stadium.

Calgary finished last year’s 15s season in heartbreaking fashion, as a late goal-line stand by Lethbridge kept the Dinos from scoring on the final series of the game in the bronze-medal game at the Canada West Final Four.

The Dinos will look to use their strong 7s season this past spring to help them into this fall slate.

Head coach Simon Chi enters his 16th season leading the Dinos. The four-time Canada West Coach of the Year has a large crop of newcomers to this year’s roster as the Dinos will once again feature one of the younger teams in the country.

Men’s Soccer

After opening the season at home last weekend, the Dinos hit the road with two games in different provinces this week.

Calgary plays at Lethbridge Friday (7 p.m.) before a Sunday doubleheader with the women’s team against Saskatchewan in Saskatoon (noon).

It was quite the start to the year for fourth-year forward Owen Antoniuk. The local product scored all four goals in the opening 4-1 win over MacEwan before finding the back of the net one again one day later against Alberta.

For his efforts, Antoniuk was named the Canada West Men’s Soccer Player of the Week on Tuesday, which also happened to be his birthday.

Despite the individual outburst, the Dinos suffered a hard-luck 2-1 loss on Sunday following a 90th-minute penalty kick.

Women’s Soccer

The Dinos play their first conference games of the year, travelling east for a pair of contests in Saskatchewan. Their regular season kicks off Saturday in Regina (noon) before the Dinos head to Saskatoon for a Sunday contest following the men’s game.

It has been an exciting number of years for Dinos women’s soccer and this season figures to be no different. Calgary returns all but one starter from a season ago that saw them turn in an 11-2-1 conference record and narrowly miss another berth to nationals.

Head coach Diogo Raposo enters his fourth season leading the Dinos and has gone 28-7-7 in conference play.

The Dinos were picked second in this year’s Canada West preseason coaches poll, receiving one first-place vote in the 15-team league.
