One final Premier League season for Adam Wharton before Real Madrid move?

Real Madrid are closely monitoring the transfer market in search of reinforcements to rejuvenate their midfield, and Adam Wharton – a standout at Crystal Palace – has emerged as one of their top long-term targets. However, the Spanish giants are likely to wait until next summer before making a move for the young Englishman.

The 20-year-old was signed by the South London club in 2024 for £21m after leaving Blackburn Rovers, and he has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising talents.

Staying in England remains Wharton's priority

This information was detailed by journalist Ed Aarons of The Guardian in an interview with Spanish outlet SPORT. According to Aarons, Los Blancos are keeping a close eye on Wharton’s development, but a formal approach is unlikely before the end of the current campaign.

Despite Real Madrid’s interest, Wharton and his representatives believe that remaining at Crystal Palace for now is the right move. Aarons explained that the plan is to gain more experience in England before considering a transfer abroad.

“I think he’s almost ready for Real Madrid, but I think his team, him, his agents and everyone don’t want him to leave yet. They want him to play another season in the Premier League, playing for Palace. Next summer, I think there is a good chance he will be available for transfer,” he said.

This position also aligns with Crystal Palace’s stance, as the club are not willing to entertain offers for the midfielder at this stage – especially following the recent departure of Eberechi Eze, another of their key players.

Comparison to Modric and Real Madrid’s valuation

Wharton’s style of play has drawn comparisons to Luka Modric, a modern icon at Real Madrid. Aarons highlighted the similarities in tactical intelligence and the ability to control the rhythm of a match.

“It’s going to cost a lot of money, but maybe he’s ready. If I have to compare him with someone, he reminds me of Modric. They have an incredible ability to detect passes. He makes everything look very easy, controls the game from a midfield position and has a fantastic leg. Both legs are very good, but especially the left. He uses them very well and has the ability to make quick passes and also beat opponents with fast movements.”

On the financial side, Palace are reported to have set an initial valuation of around €80m (£68m). However, any sale during the current window remains highly unlikely.

The most probable scenario points towards a potential move in the summer of 2026, as Real Madrid seek a smooth transition in midfield. Wharton is seen as a natural long-term successor to Modric.

Until then, the midfielder will continue his development in the Premier League, establishing himself as one of the most exciting talents of England’s emerging generation. For Real Madrid, it may be an investment worth waiting for.
