Portuguese press react to Ruben Amorim suffering worst result yet for Manchester United, and don’t hold back

Manchester United fans hoped the humiliations were over after 2024/25.

After losing a Cup Final to Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is scraping the barrel for new lows.

Now he can say his Manchester United side have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town.

It was a true giant-killing, one that Manchester United fans dared not even contemplate heading into the fixture.

United trailed for most of the match before pulling it back to 2-2, and then losing 12-11 in a penalty shootout.

Reaction in Portugal to Man Utd loss

Ruben Amorim’s appointment at Manchester United was major news in Portugal when he departed league leaders Sporting mid-season.

United’s embarrassing defeat to Grimsby Town has made major headlines in his homeland too, and it is not pleasant reading for the head coach.

CNN Portugal did not hold back, running the headline, ‘Ruben Amorim switched on disaster mode and now we can say: Manchester United has hit rock bottom’.

They wrote: “It’s starting to become truly difficult to explain what’s happening to Ruben Amorim and Manchester United.”

Assessing his future, they noted: “It’s hard to believe that all of this could precipitate the coach’s dismissal, but it could clearly be the first nail in the coffin.”

A Bola reported: ‘Amorim suffers the biggest humiliation of his career against a 4th division club’.

They added: “It seemed like it could get any worse, but this match proved that nothing was impossible.”

Publico reported: “Manchester United, and, by extension, Ruben Amorim, are experiencing nightmares.

“The start of the season has been a tremendous disappointment, and that disappointment took on scandalous overtones this Wednesday with their elimination from the Carabao Cup.”

Ruben Amorim fighting for his own reputation

Many managers have gone to Manchester United and become lost in the mire, unable to achieve or sustain any kind of success.

And while Amorim talks a good game, he is yet to get his team to show it on the pitch.

There is a wide acceptance that Amorim does have good players at the club, but there is a mistrust in his unique tactical set-up, which has struggled to take off.

The risk is that Amorim is cast adrift, and Manchester United bring in another manager who can get a tune out of this squad.

The clock is certainly ticking. A result like this can have that kind of effect.
