Jamie Carragher sent a wordless dig to Gary Neville following Manchester United's Carabao Cup defeat against Grimsby Town on Wednesday night.

United were on the wrong side of a third-round giant killing at Blundell Park. Ruben Amorim’s side found themselves 2-0 down against the League Two outfit at the break after goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren.

United did fight back after the break, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring his first goal for the club in the 75th minute before Harry Maguire scored a trademark header in the final minute of normal time to send the tie to penalties.

One full rotation of the teams could not separate the two sides in the shootout, but United were knocked out when Mbeumo’s penalty hit the bar.

The defeat means United are yet to win this season, after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal on the opening day of the campaign and drawing 1-1 with Fulham last weekend.

Not long after the final missed penalty, Carragher reposted a clip of Neville on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football on August 18, where he predicts a successful season for United.

The post quotes Neville saying: “United will surprise a few,” along with crying face emojis.

In the clip, Neville said: “Last season I remember watching Chelsea on the first game of the season and at that point, nobody had Chelsea finishing in the top four or five, and I watched them against City and I thought I saw something and thought ‘that’s not bad that, that will do damage this season, that’s a good team.’

“When I watched United yesterday (against Arsenal), I thought the performance was very good, I think they will get a goalkeeper, I am absolutely baking that they will not make the mistake of not getting a goalkeeper. When you bring a goalkeeper in and you;ve got the players up front that they had yesterday with that backline, I think with free weeks with no Champions League football and no Champions League, I think Manchester United will surprise a few people.”
