Manchester United bowed out of the Carabao Cup following a penalty shootout loss to Grimsby Town in the second round yesterday.
The Red Devils were anticipated to end their two-match winless streak at Blundell Park.
However, they made the worst possible start, conceding twice during the opening 30 minutes.
Late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire took the game to a penalty shootout.
League Two side Grimsby held their nerve to come on top (12-11) and register a shock victory.
Benjamin Sesko made his full debut for the Red Devils on the night, but had a harsh reality check.
The Slovenian ace has arrived with a glowing reputation from RB Leipzig, but struggled to cope with the physicality and aerial presence against the fourth-tier club.
The 22-year-old won just two out of 12 duels contested with just seven passes. He lost possession on nine occasions and did not look like finding the back of the net.
What was more disappointing was the fact that he did not nominate himself for an early penalty in the shootout. Sesko came as the 10th penalty taker, much to everyone’s surprise.
Sesko received a 2/10 rating from our side after a lacklustre display leading the line. It is most likely that he will drop to the bench when United host Burnley in the league on Saturday.
Manager Ruben Amorim could go with Matheus Cunha up top with Mason Mount and Mbeumo behind. Sesko still needs to adapt and could make another cameo appearance instead.
Amorim is already under immense pressure on the back of three winless games to start the campaign, and his position could be under serious scrutiny if United don’t beat the Clarets.
