Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes is set to undergo a medical ahead of joining West Ham United, according to the Daily Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath. West Ham have been in talks with the Saints all summer over a deal to bring the Portuguese to the London Stadium club. An agreement appears to have been reached between the Hammers and the Championship club for the services of the 21-year-old.

West Ham manager Graham Potter has been in dire need of reinforcements in the middle of the park before the 2025-26 Premier League campaign. The defeats to Sunderland and Chelsea further highlighted their weaknesses in the position, and the arrival of Fernandes will be a much-needed boost. The Hammers have also been dumped out of the Carabao Cup after losing 3-2 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the second round on Tuesday night. They are back in Premier League action on Sunday with a trip to City Ground to face Nottingham Forest, and having Fernandes available for the game could be a big boost.
