McConnell Heads to Ajax on Loan

Liverpool FC midfielder James McConnell is heading to Ajax Amsterdam on loan. The 20-year-old will reunite with John Heitinga, who left Anfield to take the Ajax head coach job in May.

Clubs like West Brom, Hull and Oxford United were interested in the player, but McConnell will instead move to the Eredivisie giants for the 25/26 season. Goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros is already on loan to Ajax for the season, so it stands to reason that the club’s relationship with Heitinga clearly played a key role in these loan moves.

McConnell should see plenty of minutes in midfield, with former LFC captain Jordan Henderson leaving Ajax to return to the Premier League with Brentford this summer. Ajax are also in the Champions League, presenting the player with an opportunity to gain valuable European experience.

It’s a big move for a prospect whom Arne Slot has sung the praises of. We wish James all the best this season in Amsterdam.
