Grimsby Town pulled off a massive upset in the League Cup, [dumping Manchester United out of the competition](https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/match-report-grimsby-town-v-man-utd-carabao-cup-second-round) with a marathon 12-11 penalty shootout win after the match ended 2-2 in regular time on Wednesday.
The fourth-tier minnows took a 2-0 lead at halftime, courtesy of Charles Vernam’s low shot past Andre Onana in the 22nd minute and Tyrell Warren’s tap-in after Onana failed to claim a corner in the 30th minute.
The Red Devils staged a late comeback, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring his first goal for the club in the 75th minute and Harry Maguire equalising with a header in the 89th minute.
However, it was Grimsby who emerged victorious in the penalty shootout, with Mbeumo hitting the crossbar in the decisive round at the 9,000-capacity Blundell Park.
“It’s an amazing feeling, one that will live on forever,” said Grimsby’s Charles Vernam, who scored one of the team’s goals.
Grimsby’s jubilant fans stormed onto the field to celebrate with the players after Mbeumo’s spot kick rebounded off the crossbar to seal United’s fate.
The Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim was left stunned, [admitting his team was “completely lost” during the match](https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/ruben-amorim-reaction-to-man-utd-penalty-defeat-at-grimsby).
Grimsby boss Dave Artell, on the other hand, hailed the win as “one of the proudest nights in this club’s history”.
It will go down as one of the most embarrassing results in United’s history and leaves the team winless in three games so far this campaign, after a woeful 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
They host newly promoted side Burnley on Saturday and will look to clinch their first victory in this Premier League campaign.
