Werder Bremen have been chasing Leeds United’s Isaac Schmidt all summer. They reached an agreement with the fullback in July and were waiting to sort out terms with the Whites to conclude the operation.
The Bundesliga club were frustrated the operation dragged on despite going public with their interest in the 25-year-old. On Wednesday, they even considered walking away from signing him.
Since then, there’s been a new development and Werder Bremen and Leeds have found a total agreement for Schmidt’s loan move. Earlier today, we covered claims from Germany that he’ll travel on Thursday to complete his transfer.
Kicker backs it up and says Werder Bremen should soon finalise the defender’s signing.
Although it took long time, they were eventually able to agree terms with Daniel Farke’s side to sign Schmidt on loan. He’s now on his way to Bremen to carry out medical tests.
The Whites could potential earn €3m if the German club were to exercise the purchase option, which is part of the deal. If that were to happen, Kicker reports the Switzerland international would sign a contract until 2029 with Werder Bremen.
Schmidt’s preferred position is on the left side of defence, but he can also operate as a right-back. Werder Bremen are looking at him mainly as a right-back and his versatility can be an advantage for them.
