Jamie Carragher trolls Gary Neville with immediate reaction after Man United humiliation

Jamie Carragher delivered a silent but savage blow to Gary Neville after Manchester United's humiliating Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town on Wednesday evening. The Red Devils suffered a shocking third-round upset at Blundell Park.

Ruben Amorim's men found themselves trailing 2-0 to the League Two minnows at half-time following strikes from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren.United mounted a spirited comeback in the second half, with Bryan Mbeumo netting his maiden goal for the club on 75 minutes before Harry Maguire powered home a characteristic header in stoppage time to force a penalty shootout.

A complete round of spot-kicks couldn't split the sides, but United's misery was complete when Mbeumo's effort struck the crossbar to see United fall out of the cup at the first attempt. The crushing result means United remain winless this campaign, having fallen to a 1-0 reverse against Arsenal on opening day before managing just a 1-1 stalemate with Fulham last weekend.

Shortly after the decisive penalty miss, Carragher took to his X (formerly Twitter) account and shared a clip of Neville on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football from August 18. The comments saw him boldly predict a triumphant season for United.

The post featured Neville's words: "United will surprise a few," accompanied by weeping face emojis. In the clip, Neville said: "Last season I remember watching Chelsea on the first game of the season and at that point, nobody had Chelsea finishing in the top four or five, and I watched them against City and I thought I saw something and thought 'that's not bad that, that will do damage this season, that's a good team.'

"When I watched United yesterday (against Arsenal), I thought the performance was very good, I think they will get a goalkeeper, I am absolutely baking that they will not make the mistake of not getting a goalkeeper. When you bring a goalkeeper in and you've got the players up front that they had yesterday with that backline, I think with free weeks with no Champions League football and no Champions League, I think Manchester United will surprise a few people."
