Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer reacted to Manchester United's shock Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town with a telling emoji.
Man United found themselves 2-0 down at the break but found late goals through Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, sending the tie to penalties. Mbeumo converted the first penalty during normal time but missed the decisive one.
He was on Newcastle's transfer radar earlier in the summer, while Benjamin Sesko - who came close to a move to St James' Park as well - took Man United's 10th penalty in the shootout, despite being touted as their future star striker.
Both players ultimately chose Man United over Newcastle, and now their only realistic chance of silverware this season lies in the FA Cup.
Reacting to the defeat, Shearer shared a post from football analyst 'Statman Dave,' on X (formerly Twitter).
The analyst wrote: "For the very first time in the club's history, Manchester United have lost a League Cup game to a fourth-tier team. Record breakers."
Shearer simply replied with two "eyes" emojis.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said: "Doesn't matter [that we lost on penalties]. In the penalties, the feeling is the same. I think football was really fair today. The best team won.
"I'm the manager. It should be my job to understand what happened.
"Again, I'm really sorry for our fans. Let's focus on the next game. That is more than a result.
"That is the biggest problem in the team. I think it was really clear today.
"I would like to say very smart things and very important things.
"I have nothing to say. Nothing to say. That is the biggest problem also. To see the same mistakes and nothing to say in this moment. I'm really sorry for our fans. It's too much sometimes. You cannot change so much. You cannot change everything in one summer. You need to win games. You need to not show this kind of performance.
"I think this is a little bit the limit. I think something has to change.
"In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think."
