Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak could be poised to reveal his version of events after refusing to play this season as he seeks a transfer to Liverpool.

Isak, 25, has accepted his Sweden call-up to return to action as speculation continues to rage around St James' Park - and the missing star might even face questions as soon as next week, after being requested to undertake media obligations by the Swedish FA before their autumn internationals.

Should Isak have completed his switch to the Premier League champions or not, he could naturally withdraw from any press commitments, but he has thus far met all of the Swedish FA's demands to return to duty, and may now get the chance to discuss his decision-making process this summer at length.

Chronicle Live understands that nothing has shifted between Isak and Newcastle following top-level discussions between the disgruntled star and United officials on Monday at his residence.

Manager Eddie Howe will offer an update on Isak's circumstances at his press conference before the journey to Leeds United but informed journalists in Sweden that the striker's condition has deteriorated after featuring for zero minutes during pre-season.

Swedish publication Aftonbladet has today also characterised Alexander Isak's situation at Newcastle as a "protracted conflict".

Isak had turned to Instagram last week and declared: "Promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time."

However, those assurances have been refuted by Newcastle who insist he is "welcome" to return to training at any point. Isak is holding out to see whether Liverpool will come back with a fresh offer to bring him to Anfield during the transfer window's closing days.

If not, he's due to jet off to Stockholm to meet up with Jon Dahl Tomasson and start getting ready for crucial World Cup qualifying matches against Slovenia and Kosovo.

But things could get interesting for Isak when he touches down in his homeland next week, with TV crews and journalists naturally eager to ramp up their coverage of the striker's turbulent summer.

A source in Sweden revealed to Chronicle Live: "Swedish FA officials have promised that Isak will do media, let's see if they keep that promise!"

If Isak does face the press next week, it would give the missing striker a chance to set the record straight after his brief statement failed to calm Newcastle supporters last week - though any insights into his reasons for wanting to leave the Magpies would certainly provide some "popcorn" material for media outlets worldwide.

Tomasson, unsurprisingly, backed Isak, knowing he needs the forward firing on all cylinders for two vital World Cup fixtures. The ex-Blackburn Rovers manager said: "Nobody knows the big picture."

He added: "Alex is a very professional player, a strong character and he has worked hard. He is a game changer.

"I have spoken to him several times, mentally he is strong. What we have said stays between us of course. Can he play 90 minutes? Of course not.
