Remember Matt Patricia? The former New England Patriots coach had a successful run as a defensive coordinator and a not-so-successful run as an offensive coach.
Now, just like Bill Belichick, he’s taken a job in the college ranks. Let’s check in to see where he is now.
Where are former Patriots now? Matt Patricia (2004-2017, 2021-2022)
Earlier this year, Patricia was hired as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State. He replaced former Buckeyes DC Jim Knowles, who left to take a similar position at Penn State.
With the job in Columbus, Patricia is back working in the college ranks for the first time since 2003, when he was a graduate assistant at Syracuse (his final job before landing in New England).
Back in March, Patricia said that the college game “kind of just called to me.”
Patricia had spent the 2024 season out of coaching and working in media. He co-hosted the “Coach” podcast with Belichick that year.
Now back in coaching, Patricia had landed at Ohio State with high expectations.
“I felt like Matt was that guy for a lot of reasons and the first one was his experience coaching 19 years in the NFL,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said, via cleveland.com. “He’s coached in six Super Bowls and has three Super Bowl rings. The experience speaks for itself. I think he’s one of the best minds in the game.”
After some low-level college gigs, Patricia landed in New England in 2004. He started out as an assistant offensive line coach before switching to the defensive side.
He eventually spent six seasons as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator, developing into a top coaching candidate.
In 2018, he was hired as the head coach of the Detroit Lions. It was an ill-fated run, with Patricia going 13-29-1 before he was fired mid-way through the 2020 season.
In 2021, Patricia returned to New England as a senior advisor working in multiple roles. Then in 2022, the Patriots made the controversial decision to move Patricia to the other side of the ball, having him with the offensive line and call plays on offense.
The move proved to be disastrous, and Patricia left New England after that season. In 2023, he landed with the Philadelphia Eagles as a senior defensive assistant. He eventually took on defensive playcalling duties. His contract expired at the end of the season.
