Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said the penalty shootout that saw his team dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town on Wednesday night was "not important" after refusing to watch it unfold.
United exited the competition at the second round stage after losing 12-11 on spot kicks to the League Two side, who had found themselves 2-0 up and cruising towards the third round at the halfway stage.
However, United fought back in the final 15 minutes via goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire to take the game to penalties. A marathon shootout followed and it finally came to an end when Mbeumo, who was taking his second effort, struck the crossbar.
As Grimsby's and United's players took it in turns to take their respective kicks, Amorim sat on the bench, refusing to watch alongside his players and the rest of his coaching staff.
Asked why he didn't watch the shootout, Amorim told ITV: "The penalty shootout was not important. If I'm there trying to see if we win the game, it doesn't matter.
"The beginning of the game, during the game that's what mattered.
"If we win this game, it's so unfair on these guys, the opponents. So today, the football was fair, congratulations to them.
"We move on to the next game and then we have time to decide things."
United, who had entered the Carabao Cup in the second round for the first time since 2014, were very fortunate to take the tie all the way to a shootout after such a dismal showing.
As a result of their premature exit from the competition, United will now be able to apply full focus to the Premier League until the FA Cup third round in January.
