Amorim future: Man United icon delivers sack verdict following Grimsby shocker

Former Manchester United attacker Lee Sharpe has told Sports Mole that it would be 'a step back' if the club decided to relieve head coach Ruben Amorim of his duties.

The Red Devils suffered a disaster result in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, being dumped out of the competition by League Two outfit Grimsby Town on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

Man United had managed to force a shootout courtesy of a late header from Harry Maguire, but it was Grimsby that triumphed 12-11 on penalties, with Bryan Mbeumo missing the decisive spot kick.

Amorim sent a cryptic message after the match, with the Portuguese suggesting that he could walk away from his job following Saturday's Premier League clash with Burnley at Old Trafford.

There have also been claims that the 20-time English champions could consider sacking Amorim if it becomes clear that the players are no longer behind the former Sporting Lisbon head coach.

Amorim is under pressure at Man United following Grimsby shock

However, Sharpe, who won 10 trophies during his time at Man United, has insisted that Amorim must be given time to continue to navigate the club through a turbulent period.

"You’ve backed the manager in the transfer market. You have three new attacking players [Benjamin] Sesko, Mbuemo and [Matheus] Cunha and these are top players," the three-time Premier League title winner told Sports Mole.

"You have quality in the squad who should be performing for the manager. You have to give him time as the system he wants to play, Amorim is building players around this and then you go back a step if you let Amorim go right now. So he still has time in my view, I like him, he is a bright manager."

Following the defeat to Grimsby, Amorim told reporters: "You cannot change so much. You cannot change everything in one summer. You need to win games. You need to not show this kind of performance. I think this is a little bit the limit. I think something has to change. In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think."

Amorim is believed to have given serious consideration to leaving Man United in January, but he was talked round, with club chiefs, including minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, insisting that he would be given money to spend during the summer transfer window.

That has proven to be the case, but a lack of a top-class goalkeeper again harmed the Red Devils against Grimsby, and their leading target in that area, Royal Antwerp's Senne Lammens, could now be heading for Galatasaray.

Will Amorim leave Man United after the Burnley match?

There is no getting away from the fact that it has been difficult for Amorim at Man United, with the 40-year-old only managing to win 16 of his 45 matches in charge, suffering 17 defeats in the process.

The Portuguese has a win rate of just 24.7% in the Premier League, which, by a distance, is the worst record of any Man United boss since Sir Alex Ferguson departed.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have won just seven of their 29 league games under Amorim, and Saturday's clash with Burnley is shaping up to be a huge affair for the English giants.

It is unlikely that Amorim will leave at this stage of the season, despite the current noise, and a strong result against Burnley would do a lot for Man United ahead of the September international break.

While the loss to Grimsby was damaging, there have been positive signs early in the Premier League campaign, and Man United chiefs are not believed to be considering a change at this stage of the season.

Lee Sharpe was speaking to Sports Mole on behalf of William Hill.
