MUTV pundits Phil Bardsley and Sammy McIlroy both saw eye to eye on one key Manchester United player after the penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby Town.
Grimsby Town secured their place in the next round of the knockout stages of the Carabao Cup after their emphatic second-round victory at Blundell Park.
David Artell’s men caused all kinds of problems for the Red Devils in the first half of Wednesday’s clash, with Grimsby taking a 2-0 lead over Manchester United.
United fought back against Grimsby after the break and Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back for the Red Devils before Harry Maguire netted a crucial late equaliser.
Harry Maguire’s header from a Mason Mount cross in the 89th minute forced the thrilling Carabao Cup clash to a penalty shootout at the rain-soaked Blundell Park.
However, United fell short on penalties and crashed out of the Carabao Cup after Grimsby converted all 12 of their spot-kick efforts in the nail-biting shootout.

MUTV pundit Sammy McIlroy reacted to what Matheus Cunha did vs Grimsby Town after Man Utd’s Carabao Cup defeat
Manchester United were on the verge of sealing a comeback win over Grimsby Town on Wednesday evening and progressing to the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot all converted from the spot-kick in United’s opening four penalties in the shootout against Grimsby.
Grimsby were placed on the back foot after Andre Onana denied Clarke Oduor from the spot-kick, which would later allow the Red Devils to be 4-3 up on penalties.
Matheus Cunha could have converted the winning penalty for United after stepping up as the fifth spot-kick taker, but Grimsby’s Christy Pym saved his weak effort.
Speaking on MUTV, Sammy McIlroy admitted that he was fully convinced the 26-year-old Brazil international would dispatch his spot-kick in the shootout.
“I would have put my house on it for him to send us into the next round,” he said alongside Phil Bardsley, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“I actually can’t believe how he takes it as well. It’s not a great run-up. He’s not gonna get a lot of power on it.”

Phil Bardsley makes a Matheus Cunha penalty point on MUTV and Sammy McIlroy is in full agreement about the Man Utd star
Bardsley interjected during McIlroy’s assessment of the penalty and he suggested that Matheus Cunha struggled to convert due to his build-up for the spot-kick.
“It looks a bit straight, the run up,” he told fellow MUTV pundit McIlroy.
Cunha only had a little run-up for his penalty and fired a low shot at the net, which was close to Christy Pym and allowed the Grimsby shot-stopper to dive low.
McIlroy wasted no time agreeing with Bardsley over the former Wolves ace not producing a better run and finding a better angle for the penalty in the shootout.
“Absolutely,” he said in response to Bardsley.
“Straight as well and the ‘keeper reads it and it’s an easy save for him.”
Bryan Mbeumo converted his first penalty before missing his second spot-kick effort later in the shootout to hand Grimsby their stunning second-round Carabao Cup win.
