After a three-year stint, the Seattle Seahawks have moved on from Geno Smith as their starting quarterback.
Smith had a career year in Seattle in 2024, making him a hot commodity around the league.
The Las Vegas Raiders ended up signing him to a multi-year deal, and the Seahawks brought in Sam Darnold to see if he can recreate the magic he made with the Minnesota Vikings last year.
Darnold is expected to be the starter given his experience, but the Seahawks made a surprising move in the draft that could put the pressure on him.
The Seahawks selected QB Jalen Milroe in the third round of this year’s draft, a player with a lot of upside who could be an intriguing option down the stretch.
They might not have made the monetary investment in him that they did with Darnold, but this indicated that they’re willing to invest in their QB of the future.
In some people’s eyes, that future should come sooner rather than later.
Analyst Brian Baldinger recently highlighted Milroe’s greatness in college, and that the team should give him a chance as soon as possible.
“Watching Jalen Milroe at Alabama, we probably thought that Seattle and Klint Kubiak would put these kinds of plays in. He was just basically outrunning defenses, get off the freeway unharmed. But did we think he was going to make these kinds of throws already? Jalen Milroe is going to be ready for prime time, and it’s not going to take long,” Baldinger said.
.@Seahawks @JalenMilroe how long before Milroe is ready for prime time. I am excited when it happens. #BaldysBreakdowns pic.twitter.com/2Ab5TzgwZG

Darnold has a lot more experience in the league than Milroe, of course, but he doesn’t have the same rushing upside.
Milroe brings a lot of athleticism and scrambling ability to the table, something NFL teams are valuing more and more in recent seasons.
Fans are looking forward to seeing how Darnold performs in a new offense, but if he falters, the Seahawks could put their rookie in at some point and see what he can do.
