Exclusive: Despite Harvey Elliott U-turn, Liverpool will sell £40m star to Jurgen Klopp on one condition

TBR Football understands that Liverpool are considering keeping Harvey Elliott, even if a club meets the asking price by Monday.

Liverpool placed a £40m price tag on his head following the summer’s European Championship – where he played a starring role.

Former club Fulham showed interest, as did West Ham, while Crystal Palace and Tottenham have also looked at Elliott; however, nobody has come close to a deal.

One team that has and is pushing hard is RB Leipzig, with Jurgen Klopp pushing to bring him in – however, they are still waiting for Xavi Simons to complete his move to Chelsea – although again Spurs are also showing an interest in him.

But as highlighted in Monday’s win at Newcastle, which saw Elliott come off the bench and play his part in setting up Rio Ngumoha’s winner, the 22-year-old could still have a role to play at Anfield.

Exclusive: Liverpool do not want to lose Harvey Elliott

According to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, the Reds are eager to retain Elliott beyond the 1 September deadline but are aware of his growing concerns regarding minutes ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Bailey states: “It really is not a given that Liverpool let Harvey Elliott leave by Monday. He came on at Newcastle and made an impact, and interestingly, it was not just a mere replacement for Mo Salah – as some see his current role in the squad.

“Elliott has a lot to offer his Liverpool side, and I am told that a number of people within the club don’t think he should be sold this summer.

“From the player’s point of view, he loves Liverpool, but he does want more game time in order to push his World Cup credentials, and the club understands that too.”

Sources informed TBR Football that Elliott loves Liverpool but would welcome an exit to a side in which he would be a guaranteed first-team starter.

The England Under-21 international featured only 18 times in the Premier League last season, predominantly off the bench despite becoming a mainstay in the side during Klopp’s final year at Anfield.

As TBR Football previously revealed, Liverpool value Elliott at around £50m but would be willing to lower their demands for the likes of RB Leipzig, should the Bundesliga outfit agree to include a buy-back clause.

Liverpool would like a buy back clause to sell Harvey Elliott

The Reds, of course, reached a similar agreement with Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace for the respective sales of Jarell Quansah and Ben Doak.

Liverpool have undergone wholesale changes to the 2024/25 title-winning squad as Arne Slot shows his ruthless streak on Merseyside.

However, the club have been smart with their business this summer, recognising that although certain players are deemed not good enough to play for the Reds now, they very well may be in the future.

Therefore, if Elliott decides he wishes to leave Anfield this summer, then Richard Hughes will likely sanction a sale with a buy-back clause, leaving the door open for a Liverpool return.
