Dawn Staley says she would have taken Knicks job if offered

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley said she would have seriously considered an NBA job if offered earlier this summer.

During an appearance on the “Post Moves” podcast with Candace Parker and former Gamecock Aliyah Boston, Staley shed more light on her interview with the New York Knicks. The episode premiered on Wednesday.

“It was the same interview [as] everybody else that was in their candidate pool...same thing,” she said. “I thought I did pretty well. I was well prepared for the interview.”

Staley also said that if the Knicks made her an offer to become the first woman to become a head coach in the NBA, she “would have had to do it.”

“Not just for me, it’s for women. Just to break open that,” said Staley. “And I’m from the Philly, but it’s the freaking New York Knicks.”

The team eventually offered the position to Mike Brown.

Staley, meanwhile, is now preparing for her 17th season with South Carolina and looking to add a fourth national championship to the program.
