Who is Kostas Tsimikas of Liverpool?

Konstantinos/Kostas Tsimikas, a Greek international defender who plays in the left-back position. The 29-year-old is energetic and is capable to deliver crosses into the box. He joined Olympiacos’ academy in his youth, where he started to shine.

He spent some time out on loan to gain experience. Tsimikas went to Esbjerg FB in Denmark and Willem II in Netherlands where he started to develop his game. He showed the abilities required to survive in European football. After returning to Olympiacos, he became a reliable left-back in Greek Super League and in Europe. He impressed everyone with his stamina and attacking input.

In 2020, Liverpool signed him from Olympiacos for 13 million Euros. Kostas came to Anfield as cover and competition for Andrew Robertson. Robertson’s strong position in first eleven and injuries made it difficult for him to get regular starts. But whenever he was called, he delivered performances with his defensive hardwork and accurate set-piece delivery.

Tsimikas has also established himself as first choice left-back in the Greece national team. He has represented Greece regularly.

Kostas Tsimikas is a modern day full-back. He always push forward, overlap and deliver crosses. He has the pace and energy to run up and down the left flank. The Greek international is also not afraid to go into tackles, which makes him defensively useful.

A Transfer to Rome?

Romano is reporting that Roma have made an offer for Tsimikas for a loan deal. The Italian team would be an ideal destination for the 29-year-old. Tsimikas, popularly known as the “Greek Scouser,” moved to Liverpool in 2020 from Olympiacos. He has since featured in over 100 games and in has won numerous trophies for the club.

Why Leave Now?

There are a number of reasons behind the transfer:

New Competition: Liverpool newly signed Milos Kerkez, who is a good left-back, making Liverpool’s bench at the left-back position even more difficult.

Limited Game Time: Tsimikas has spent most of his time playing as a substitute to Andrew Robertson, limiting his opportunities. He has struggled for regular starts.

Desire for European Football: Tsimikas is seeking first-team football on a regular basis and desires to play in European matches—which Roma will have to provide.

Liverpool’s Stance

Though Tsimikas likes Roma, Liverpool prefer a permanent sale and not a temporary loan. The club has an estimated valuation for him at around £12–£15 million. It is a reasonable price considering his experience.

What Tsimikas Said

Kostas Tsimikas has publicly declared that he is happy at Liverpool. He informed Greek media that he’s “happy” in England. He is proud to contribute to the club. Still, he has also confirmed his desire to play more frequently. The introduction of Kerkez most likely means his time at Liverpool may soon be coming to an end.
