‘Too far’ - Jamie Carragher slams Wor Flags banner before Newcastle United vs Liverpool

Newcastle United supporters sent the players a strong message ahead of the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on Monday.

Jamie Carragher has criticised Newcastle United supporters for geeing up the players ahead of Monday’s game against Liverpool.

As usual, Wor Flags volunteered behind the scenes before the fixture to create a pre-match display at St James’ Park. Added spice was placed on the occasion due to the ongoing transfer saga involving work-shy striker Alexander Isak.

A banner urging Newcastle players to “Get into them” was displayed to help rally the troops before a big Premier League clash. The same message has been used on previous occasions, including the Carabao Cup final in March.

Jamie Carragher not a fan

However, Liverpool legend Carragher believes the tone went “too far” and proved detrimental to the Magpies. He told The Overlap: “As the game started, there was a banner in the crowd ‘Get into them’. It was one of those games that felt like a throwback, like something from the 90s.

“The football wasn’t amazing, it wasn’t about tactics or systems, it was about everyone putting in big challenges. I enjoyed it from that point of view. I just think, as clubs, you’ve always got to use something to add a little (spice) to the game. Liverpool are going for Isak, we know what it was about.

“But it went too far, a banner saying ‘Get into them’. My point being, this game was built up. Use something like the Isak situation to add an extra edge, I get that. But I'm sitting there thinking, ‘Liverpool have just made a bid for a player. What else is it?’

“I’m not trying to have a go at them for it but it did go too far. A man got sent off. If they don’t lose a man, they probably don’t lose the game.”

Eddie Howe on Liverpool defeat

Eddie Howe felt as though Newcastle “controlled” the game despite having 10 men. He said post-match: "First half, we thought we dominated the game. We were in a great place with just the goal missing.

"Second half, we had a mountain to climb at 2-0 down with 10 men, but I thought we controlled the game. I thought we were really good and fought our way back unbelievably well but couldn't get over the line to get a point.

"It's tough to play against 11 men, especially against a team with the quality of Liverpool. The first goal was key - it gave us belief, got us back into the match and we always felt if the margin was one we'd be able to get something from the match."

Arne Slot hails ‘unbelieveable’ atmosphere

Liverpool boss Arne Slot was full of praise for St James’ Park’s atmosphere at full-time. He told reporters: “How do you sum an evening like this up? It felt familiar to me; I think I have experienced a game like this once before since I'm here in England - that was Everton away last season.

“Where so many things happened, where it was complete chaos, where the fans were so loud and so there for the home team and our fans tried to help us as much as they could.

“It was an unbelievable atmosphere and for us to stay strong in that atmosphere for such a long time is worth more to me than when we play every single time out from the back and we have a four or five-nil win.”
