Has he lost the dressing room? Ex-Man United winger responds to Amorim's cryptic comments

Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe has insisted that Ruben Amorim has not lost the dressing room despite the club's poor start to the 2025-26 season.

After enduring their worst Premier League campaign last term, Man United were hoping to experience an upturn in fortunes in Amorim's first full season in charge.

However, Amorim's woes have continued in the opening stages of the new season, having seen his side take just one point from two league games, before they suffered an unthinkable EFL Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby Town.

Amorim delivered a cryptic message following Wednesday's EFL Cup defeat to the League Two side, claiming that the "players spoke really loud" with their performance at Blundell Park.

Has Amorim lost the Man United dressing room?

The post-match comments have led to speculation about whether the Man United head coach has lost the dressing room at Old Trafford.

However, Sharpe, who made 259 appearances for Man United, believes that the dressing room will still be backing Amorim at this early stage of the campaign.

"It’s a really difficult one right now," Sharpe told Sports Mole. "Amorim has been backed in the transfer market, the attacking new players will take time to join , but they must start getting results."

"It’s a really difficult one for the club right now, as you have a manager playing a certain way and trying to build a squad to do so.

"I don’t know the answer as the results should be coming now. I don’t believe he has lost the dressing room, as it’s so early in the season with new players coming in.

"You have to perform at training in the first instance. You have to want to perform as well."

What next for Amorim and Man United?

Man United will be reeling after being eliminated from a cup competition by a fourth-tier team for the first time in their history.

However, Amorim will have to quickly pick up his players for Saturday's Premier League home clash against newly-promoted Burnley.

The contest takes on extra importance because a failure to claim all three points will ramp up the pressure on Amorim heading into the international break.

There already appears to be speculation surrounding the Portuguese's future, considering the fact that he has won just 35.6% of his competitive matches as Man United boss - the lowest win percentage of any Red Devils manager in the Premier League era.

Lee Sharpe was speaking to Sports Mole on behalf of William Hill.
