Newcastle United are set to sign Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade for a club-record fee.
Newcastle United have agreed a £65million deal to sign German international Nick Woltemade, NewcastleWorld understands.
Toon chiefs have pushed for a striker all summer - a situation that has heightened tenfold by the Alexander Isak saga. All the noises in recent days had centred around Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-forward Jorgen Strand Larsen.
The player - who only joined Wolves two months ago - has been open to the Toon interest. However, the Midlands outfit have made it clear that they do not wish to sell the Norwegian this window.
A dramatic 48 hours since the second Larsen bid was rejected has resulted in Newcastle striking a deal with Stuttgart for Woltemade. It is understood that the 23-year-old - who has two caps for Germany - will travel to Tyneside tomorrow for a medical.
At this point, it is unclear what this breakthrough means regarding Isak and his possible Liverpool move. Word in recent days suggested Newcastle were only in the market for a Callum Wilson replacement.
But the fact the Magpies are set to sign a striker can only bolster Liverpool’s cause. Isak made it abundantly clear to the St James’ Park hierarchy on Monday that he does not want to play in black-and-white stripes again.
For now, Newcastle fans can rejoice that one striker is willing to pull on the Toon jersey after a chaotic summer. Woltemade will arrive as the club’s record signing - ironically replacing Isak.
