The Las Vegas Raiders knew they needed to make a big splash with their first-round selection.
That’s why, contrary to the usual approach, they used their No. 6 pick to get a running back.
Of course, Ashton Jeanty is no ordinary running back, and he looks more than worthy of such a steep selection.
In fact, NFL experts believe he’s the leading candidate to run away with Offensive Rookie of the Year honors this season:
“This year’s preseason favorite for OROY, Ashton Jeanty, could become the first running back to claim the honor since Saquon Barkley in 2018 and just the second Raider in the franchise’s history to win the award (Marcus Allen, 1982),” per NFL writers.
Jeanty was a Heisman finalist in his final season at Boise State.
Judging by his unmatched production, it’s safe to say that he would’ve been a more than legitimate winner.
He posted some of the most impressive numbers by any running back in college football history, wreaking havoc out of the backfield and manhandling his opposition with ease.
Some have expressed concerns about his tendency to run over people, citing the wear and tear and the physicality of the pros and how that may affect his durability and efficiency at the next level.
Then again, that hunger and underdog mentality are precisely what made him such a special player.
Jeanty is the type of running back who’s looking to make a statement with every carry, a potential big-play in the making with every touch.
The Raiders will make him the focal point of their offense, and volume won’t be an issue for him to post the big numbers experts think he’ll post.
Hopefully, he’ll stay healthy and show the type of special running back he can be.
