Kansas City Chiefs add players to practice squad. Who found spots and what to know

Following Tuesday’s 53-man roster cuts, the Kansas City Chiefs announced Wednesday that they have added 14 players to their practice squad.

Here are those players, with a bit of info on each:

Linebacker Cole Christiansen

Christiansen caught on with the Chiefs in 2022 and has appeared in 15 regular-season games. Thus far, he has played solely on special teams, logging nearly 200 snaps in three seasons.

Safety Mike Edwards

In one of the surprises of the 53-man roster cutdown, the six-year veteran landed back with Kansas City on its practice squad. With only three safeties on the Chiefs’ active roster, Edwards has a clear pathway to elevation.

Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire

Drafted by KC in the first round of LSU in 2020, Edwards-Helaire was waived by the Chiefs in 2024 and signed with the New Orleans Saints.

He appeared in the final two games last season, rushing for a total of 46 yards on 13 attempts with three receptions for 24 yards. He was in the Saints’ training camp this summer but was released earlier this week.

Offensive lineman Chukwuebuka Godrick

Godrick became a member of the Chiefs in 2023 as part of the International Player Pathway program and showed signs of progress in this summer’s training camp.

Offensive lineman CJ Hanson

Hanson, a 2024 seventh-round pick, stays in Kansas City after appearing in just one game in 2024: the team’s 38-0 Week 18 loss to the Denver Broncos. In that matchup, Hanson logged all of his snaps at right guard. This preseason, he primarily worked at right guard while also mixing in at left guard and center.

Wide receiver Jimmy Holiday

A 2025 undrafted free agent out of Louisiana Tech, Holiday impressed at training camp and made three catches for 60 yards in the preseason. Those numbers included a 50-yard catch from Chris Oladokun in the team’s final exhibition game against the Chicago Bears.

Defensive tackle Coziah Izzard

Izzard joined the Chiefs for training camp as an undrafted senior out of Penn State. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 304 pounds, Izzard is a big body that Kansas City is interested in developing along the interior.

Cornerback Kevin Knowles

An undrafted free agent out of Florida State, Knowles caught the eye of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo during training camp and at times earned second-team reps at nickel. Knowles finished the preseason with four tackles.

Quarterback Chris Oladokun

Oladokun, a former seventh-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022, joined the Chiefs’ practice squad when he did not make Pittsburgh’s initial roster. He has been with Kansas City ever since. This year, Oladokun began training camp as the team’s fourth quarterback, but he overtook Bailey Zappe with his play in the team’s first preseason game.

Wide receiver Hal Presley

Presley signed on with the Chiefs as a 2025 undrafted free agent out of Baylor shortly after the departure of WR Justyn Ross. Presley made the most of his opportunity, catching two passes for 20 yards in the preseason.

Cornerback Melvin Smith

The Chiefs brought Smith aboard this offseason despite being a Division II undrafted free agent out of Southern Arkansas. The signing paid dividends, as Smith showed enough for Kansas City to keep him around as a developmental long shot.

Running back Carson Steele

Tuesday’s 53-man roster decision had to be difficult for Steele, who appeared in 17 games for the Chiefs last season. Instead of Steele, KC opted for free-agent signee Elijah Mitchell to make the club, but Steele remains on the practice squad.

Tight end Robert Tonyan

Because of how he performed in the preseason — leading the Chiefs with eight receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown — many were surprised to see Tonyan left off the initial 53-man roster. Because of his accrued service, Tonyan was released instead of waived, allowing the Chiefs to wink and add him back the next day.

Defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu

Tuipulotu entered the NFL as a 2021 sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, landing in Kansas City in 2024 when he did not make that year’s Eagles roster. In 2024, Tuipulotu appeared in Weeks 17 and 18 before an undisclosed injury ended his season.

Tight end Tre Watson

Along with undrafted free agent Jake Briningstool, Watson is a player the Chiefs like as a developmental prospect out of Texas A&M. Now on the practice squad, he will have the opportunity to continue to garner knowledge from one of the greatest tight ends of all time, Travis Kelce

Practice squad rules

The Chiefs (and every NFL team) can add up to 16 players to their practice squad, as well as an International Player Pathway exemption, which the club is taking advantage of with Godrick.

Practice squads can include up to six veterans with unlimited accrued seasons. The remaining 10 slots must be taken up by players with two or fewer accrued seasons.

Each week, teams can “elevate” up to two practice-squad players per game. Each practice-squad player comes with a maximum of three elevations before he needs to be added to the active roster.
