Leeds United full-back Isaac Schmidt has completed a transfer to Werder Bremen imminently on loan, with a buy option included.

United’s final few days of the summer window are likely to be busier than most in the Premier League, both with incomings and outgoings expected.

James Justin’s arrival in West Yorkshire from Leicester City paves the way for a certain full-back to finally leave the club after a dearth of playing opportunities.

Justin joining Leeds means that Isaac Schmidt has unsurprisingly become surplus to requirements, and the Swiss international wasted no time this summer in pursuing options away from Elland Road, agreeing personal terms with Werder Bremen back in July.

He’s been made to wait for his move to be ratified by United amidst a search for his replacement, but with Justin in the doors, Schmidt is heading to the Bundesliga.

Sky Sports Germany reporter Patrick Berger revealed that a loan was in place from Leeds to Bremen, while the Bundesliga side have also agreed a buy “option” for the full-back amounting between €3-4million (£2.6-3.5million).

That deal has now been confirmed by United:

Valuable opportunity for Isaac Schmidt as Leeds United depreciate another asset

Charlie Cresswell, Djed Spence, Mateo Joseph, Largie Ramazani, and now Isaac Schmidt are all players that will argue they deserved much better opportunities under Daniel Farke at Elland Road.

All of those have left either permanently or on loan (Spence loan terminated and he’s gone onto great things already), and have left for valuations that don’t tie in with the potential we know they have in the game.

Schmidt has a great opportunity ahead of the 2026 World Cup, and the fact that Bremen can surprisingly sign him for potentially as little as £2.5million shows how poorly he’s been managed in a year when Leeds were so dominant in the Championship and could have utilised him so much better.

Of course, some of these players weren’t getting opportunities because the starters in front of them were nigh on impossible to drop, but their complete lack of minutes is a worrying trend to say the least.
