Former Man Utd talent with special Old Trafford connection announces retirement after 72 international caps

One former Manchester United academy star announced his retirement after earning 72 international caps throughout his career.

The Manchester United academy has produced some of the best players the world has seen.

From the Busby Babes to the Class of 92, United fans have seen truly world-class players perform regularly at Old Trafford.

Still, to this day, it is considered a proud tradition that United produce many players from their academy. The latest stars from the academy include Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, who were part of the FA Cup-winning team in 2023.

United will hope to continue producing players for the first team, with many exciting prospects in the ranks, including Chido Obi and Sekou Kone.

Some players don’t make it at United but go on to enjoy careers at other clubs. The coaching staff at the club take great pride in preparing players for all levels of the professional game.

Corry Evans still won 72 caps for Northern Ireland, scoring twice, and made his final appearance for the national team during a 2-0 win over Andorra in June 2024.

He had been without a club since leaving Oldham Athletic at the end of last season.

Taking to Instagram to announce his statement, Corry shared multiple pictures, including one with his former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. His statement read: “After an incredible journey, the time has come to hang up my boots.

“From coming through the Academy at Manchester United, to winning promotions with Hull City and Blackburn Rovers, captaining Sunderland to promotion at Wembley, a short spell at Bradford City followed by a Wembley win with Oldham. I’ve loved every step along the way!

“Representing my country 72 times, and playing at Euro 2016 will always be one of my proudest achievements.

“A huge thank you to my family, teammates, coaches and the fans who’ve supported me throughout the highs and lows. It’s been an unforgettable ride.”

What’s next for Evans?

Evans has accepted a role to work as a coach under Northern Ireland U21s manager Tommy Wright.

He will bring a wealth of experience to the table after coming through the youth ranks at United, winning promotions with Hull City and Blackburn Rovers, captaining Sunderland to promotion, as well as enjoying spells at Bradford City and Oldham.
