Leeds United and Burnley are believed to have made an enquiry for the ex Chelsea and Spurs forward.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur forward Timo Werner could be handed a chance at Premier League redemption at newly promoted Leeds United amid reports of an enquiry from the Yorkshire outfit.

The 29-year-old has been on the books at RB Leipzig since 2022, where he returned from Chelsea for a reported £25 million. Werner still has another 12 months on what is believed to be a lucrative contract deal with the Bundesliga outfit.

That could push Leipzig to want to cash in on the forward this summer and Leeds United could be potential suitors. Daniel Farke’s side have had a mixed start to the season with a triumphant win over Everton at Elland Road followed by a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Leeds United enquire over ex Chelsea and Tottenham star

German outlet BILD carries the reports of Leeds United transfer interest with enquiries supposedly sent to RB Leipzig by the Whites, as well as fellow new Premier League arrivals Burnley. Clubs in France, Italy, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are also believed to have shown interest, with Werner’s future currently up in the air.

The forward is not expected to be a key part of the first team at RB Leipzig this season, which could see the club push for a sale. However, it is added that Werner is not pushing for a move and is happy to see out his contract with the club.

Chelsea paid a huge £47.5 million to sign the star from Leipzig in June 2020 and the player spent a tough two years at Chelsea. Werner never appeared to adjust to the Premier League with just 10 top flight goals in 56 outings for the Blues.

Timo Werner’s previous Premier League struggles

Spurs took a punt on the forward on a short-term loan spell in January 2024, which was then extended for the 2024/25 season. The north London club had the chance to buy Werner for just £8.5 million but passed on the opportunity with the German international scoring just two goals in 31 Premier League outings.

A move to Leeds United would provide Werner the chance to shake off the Premier League ‘flop’ reputation that has followed him after previously struggling for goals in the division. Speaking about the player during his loan at Spurs, ex Premier League star Don Hutchinson said: “I don’t want to be unkind on Timo Werner, but you sort of can’t help it, because you want him to succeed.

“He’s not a bad player, he’s got loads of strengths, in that Man United game he could’ve scored three or four. There was one moment in that game that summed him up, he ran 50 yards and all he had to do was find a Spurs player, he missed them both and found a Man United player. It’s a technique thing, at his age he won’t find the goals because he’s proven that he can’t finish, but he stretches games, that’s why Spurs signed him.”
