Liverpool signed Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, having won the Dutch Footballer of the Year.

Gakpo’s football journey began at just six years old when he joined PSV Eindhoven’s youth setup.

After progressing through the academy, he made his senior debut in February 2018 against Feyenoord.

The 2021-22 campaign marked a breakthrough year. Gakpo registered 12 goals and 13 assists in the Eredivisie and scored the decisive goal in the Dutch Cup final, inspiring PSV to victory over Ajax.

His outstanding performances earned him the Dutch Footballer of the Year award, making him the first PSV player to claim the honour since Georginio Wijnaldum in 2014-15.

Gakpo also impressed in Europe, scoring seven times in 15 appearances across Champions League qualifiers, the Europa League, and the Europa Conference League.

On the international stage, Gakpo made his senior Netherlands debut at Euro 2020 and starred at the 2022 World Cup, scoring in every group-stage match as the Dutch reached the quarter-finals.

Following his move to Liverpool, Gakpo debuted against Wolverhampton Wanderers and quickly endeared himself to the Anfield faithful by scoring in a Merseyside derby win over Everton.

He followed that with a memorable brace in Liverpool’s historic 7-0 victory over Manchester United.

In his first full season with the Reds, Gakpo scored 16 goals and lifted his first piece of silverware, the Carabao Cup, solidifying his place as a key figure in Liverpool’s attack.

Last season, he played an instrumental role in helping Arne Slot’s side clinch the Premier League title.

Gakpo racked up 49 appearances, scored 18 goals, and provided seven assists in all competitions.

This season, he has featured in both of Liverpool’s Premier League games, scoring once and providing two assists.

Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo is on the verge of signing a new contract at Liverpool, according to Rik Elfrink.

His current contract expires in the summer of 2028.
