The Detroit Lions have filled the final spot on their 16-man practice squad, announcing the addition of edge rusher Andre Carter II on Thursday after he was waived by the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday.
The 25-year-old defensive end and 2021 third-team All-American out of Army went undrafted in 2023 and signed with the Minnesota Vikings and made the initial 53-man roster.
He played in 12 games as a rookie, mixing snaps on special teams and along the D-line. Carter — at 6-foot-6, 257 pounds — totaled just two tackles in 210 snaps for the Vikings.
Carter would be waived by the Vikings in 2024 roster cuts and signed on the the Minnesota practice squad. The Raiders signed him off the the practice squad in December and got three games out of the Murrieta, California native, where he had one tackle, combined for a sack and logged one QB hit.
During preseason, Carter received ample opportunities to work along the defensive line in games, playing 59 snaps primarily as a pass rusher.
In three games, Carter had seven total quarterback pressures, with two sacks and four QB hurries. It wasn’t enough to crack the Raiders’ 53-man roster and he went unclaimed on waivers.
The addition of Carter now caps the Lions’ practice squad, unless they bring in a player via the international pathway program, which allows them one more spot.
That means a pair of familiar Lions in edge rusher Nate Lynn and safety Ian Kennelly won’t be on the initial practice squad and the Lions won’t carry a third quarterback into the beginning of the season.
